Word problems on Mean, Median and Mode

Friends, I explained you about Mean, Median and Mode earlier . But with the introduction given to you will not have a clear idea how to solve it. There are online mean, median, mode range worksheet these days just check them out.

This is the continuous of my previous post which gives you the introduction of mean, mode and median, i have posted earlier. I have a few word problems which will help you understand the concept.

Word problem 1:

Following are the ages (in years) of 10 men at a office:

32, 41, 28, 54, 35, 26, 23, 33, 38, 40

1) What is the mean age of these men?

2) What is the median age of these men?

3) What is the range of the ages of the men?

4) What is most number of men are in the same age?

Solution:

Arrange the ages in ascending order: 23, 26, 28, 32, 33, 35, 38, 40, 41, and 54.

1) Mean = (32+41+28+54+35+26+23+33+38+40) / 10

Mean = 350 / 10 = 35years

2) Median is the middle values of the given set of data.

Median = (33+35) / 2 = 34.

So, the median is 34 years.

3) Range= highest age – lowest age= 54 -23 = 31 years

So, the range is 31 years.

4) There is repetition in the given set of data. So, there is no mode.

Word problem 2:

Following are the weights (in kg) of 8 students in a school:

48.5, 50, 44.5, 49.5, 50.5, 45, 51, 43

1) What is the mean weight of these students?

2) What is the median age of these students?

3) What is the range of the ages of the students?

4) What is most number of students are in the same age?

Solution:

Arrange the ages in ascending order: 43, 44.5, 45, 48.5, 49.5, 50, 50.5, and 51.

1) Mean = (43+44.5+45+48.5+49.5+50+50.5+51) / 8

Mean = 382 / 8 = 47.75kg.

2) Median is the middle values of the given set of data.

Median = (48.5+49.5) / 2 = 49.

So, the median is 49 kg.

3) Range= highest age – lowest age= 51 -43 =8kg.

So, the range is 8kg.

4) There is repetition in the given set of data. So, there is no mode.

Here, above we see how to find the mean, mode and the median step by step. Work on it and increase your knowledge. Let me know your views on this post and i will post some more informative post for you.
